That conversation with a retiree at the lumber yard changed how I look at my work
Was picking up some oak boards at the local yard in Dayton for a bookshelf project and ended up chatting with this older guy, must have been 70 something, waiting for his order too. He asked what I was building and after I told him, he just smiled and said "you know, the best joints aren't the ones that fit the tightest, they're the ones you can take apart without breaking anything." At first I thought that was kind of odd because I always aim for tight fits, right? But he explained he used to build stage sets for theaters and everything had to come down easy. It really hit me different because I've spent years focusing on making stuff permanent, but now I'm thinking about how to design things so they can be repaired or moved without destroying the wood. Has anyone else had a random conversation like that that totally reframed your approach to a project?

Fight it all you want but tight joints just hold up better over time, period.
