That comment about not trusting miter saw detents changed my whole approach

I heard a guy on a job site say miter saw detents are always off by at least half a degree, so I checked mine with a digital angle gauge and he was right. Now I zero out manually every time, has anyone else found theirs that far off?

Right, because the real issue is clearly my "calibration method" and not the fact that detents are basically factory guesses. I checked my old rigid against my speed square and a digital angle finder, and the 45 was off by 0.6 degrees. But sure, my saw just needs a good "talkin' to" and a square that costs more than the saw to be perfect.

My 10 year old dewalt slider is dead nuts on every detent I've tested with a machinist square. You probably just have a cheaper saw or one that took a hit during shipping. Maybe check your calibration method before trashing the whole concept.
