Old timer's chalk line trick saved my stair stringer layout

My buddy's grandpa who framed houses in the 70s told me to snap the stringer lines with a chalk line before cutting, and I thought it was overkill until I messed up a set in Phoenix last week... The chalk leaves a faint guide that keeps your circular saw from wandering on the plywood, even after you mark the riser numbers with a pencil. Anyone else got a weird tip from an older carpenter that actually works better than the modern way?
