My old framing nailer finally gave up on a job last Tuesday

I was out in Easton roofing a garage addition and my Hitachi nailer started spitting nails sideways. Spent 20 minutes thinking it was a jam or the air pressure, but the piston seal just blew. Had to finish the last 30 rafters with a hammer and nails like a 1980s rookie. My hands are still sore three days later. Anyone else sticking with an older tool until it dies or do you swap out before they break?

Why not just buy a new one before the old one gives out? You knew that Hitachi had been clanking for months probably. Now you're out a day's labor plus the cost of the nailer plus your hands hurt for a week. That math doesn't work for me. I swap my framing nailer every three years whether it needs it or not. Beats losing a whole afternoon and wrecking your palms on a job.

Beats losing a whole afternoon" - but so does wasting money on tools that still work.
