Had to pick between pocket screws and dowels for a set of oak chairs I'm building
Went with dowels because I figured they'd hold up better to the rocking motion, and man the alignment jig paid for itself after the first joint didn't come out crooked - anyone else ever regret going the pocket screw route on furniture that gets a lot of movement?

Pocket screws would've been way stronger for that oak though.

The 1/4" dowel holes I drilled in that oak last month blew out even with a brad point bit. @amymiller, I don't know if pocket screws would have saved that joint with how hard white oak is. A lot of guys swear by them but I've had better luck with mortise and tenon for thick stock like that. Pocket screws are great for softwoods or plywood but I just don't trust them on hard dense stuff.
