Client wants crown molding in a room with 9 foot ceilings that pitch

Had a homeowner in Columbus ask me to run crown in their bonus room where the ceiling slopes up to 9 feet, but the walls are uneven by almost half an inch. I measured 3 times and tried doing a cope cut blind, ended up with a gap that looked like a smile. How do you guys handle crown on a slope without pulling out a laser level every 10 minutes?
