Bought a $200 planer off Facebook Marketplace and it was a total loss

I saw a Dewalt planer listed for $200 last month and jumped on it without checking it out first. The guy said it worked fine but when I got it home the blades were totally shot and the feed roller was seized up. I spent another $80 on new blades and tried to fix the roller myself but ended up stripping a gear inside. Now I've got a paperweight that cost me $280 total and I could have just bought a new one for $400. Anyone else get burned by a deal that seemed too good to be true?

Did you not even ask him to plug it in and run a board through before you handed over the cash?

Man people really just throw money at stuff without the bare minimum checking nowadays.

Did you actually remember to check the feed roller before you started messing with the gears? That seized roller probably just needed the gunk cleaned out from under it, not a whole tear down. Next time, grab a can of PB Blaster and let it soak overnight before you even touch a wrench. If the motor hums but the roller doesn't spin, it's almost always old sawdust and dried up grease locking it up, not a blown gear.
