Why does nobody talk about how networking events are just social hour for extroverts?

I went to a career mixer in Austin last month and spent 45 minutes trying to get a word in while this marketing guy talked about his startup. Either you're the one pitching your story or you're the one nodding along. Is there really a middle ground where quiet people actually get something out of these things, or is it all just a game for loud talkers?
