The job posting that straight-up lied about pay

Last Tuesday I interviewed for a marketing coordinator role at a firm near downtown Austin. The posting said $55k-$65k, but after sitting through a 90-minute meeting, they offered $42k and called it "competitive." I told them I couldn't work for less than my current rate, and they acted surprised. Has anyone else had companies bait-and-switch salary ranges like this?

$42k for a marketing coordinator in Austin is insulting, not competitive. That's basically admitting they know the range was wrong but hoping someone desperate takes it.

My friend Alex took a marketing job in Dallas back in 2019 for $38k and they promised a raise after six months. Six months came and went, they kept making excuses, and she ended up leaving after a year with nothing but stress. The thing is, companies like that know exactly what they're doing, they're banking on people who can't afford to say no right now. $42k in Austin is basically poverty wages when you factor in rent and groceries there, I don't know how anyone survives on that. It's almost like they want someone fresh out of college who doesn't know any better yet. Why do employers think it's okay to lowball people this badly in a city that's not even cheap anymore?
