Showerthought: I thought networking events were a waste of time until last month

I always figured those mixers were just people handing out business cards and making fake small talk. But last month at a local startup meetup in Austin, I ended up chatting with a guy who runs a small dev shop. He mentioned they were looking for a junior dev and I had just finished a bootcamp. Three interviews later I got the job. Has anyone else had a random conversation at an event actually lead to something real?

Oh come on, is it really that great or did you just get lucky? Most of those meetups are 90% sales pitches and 10% people who actually want to help. I've been to maybe 20 of them over the years. Walked out with a stack of business cards and zero jobs. Zero. All talk no substance. Half the people there are just scoping out competition or trying to sell you their overpriced consulting. You hit the lottery with that one chat. For every success story there are a hundred people who wasted their evening listening to some guy pitch his crypto startup.

Heard a buddy @ramirez.caleb say the same thing but his cousin met his cofounder at one.
