A hiring manager in Denver told me my resume was "too honest" and it messed with my head for 2 years
I was at a job fair in Denver back in 2019, standing at this one booth for a company I actually wanted to work for. The guy looked at my resume for maybe 30 seconds and said I was "too honest" about the gap I took to care for my mom. He said most people just put "career break" or "family leave" and move on, but I had written a whole line about it. I walked out of there feeling like I did something wrong by being real. After that I started writing "sabbatical" on applications and got 3 callbacks in 2 weeks, which honestly made me feel worse about the whole thing. Now I keep two versions of my resume and I hate that I do it. Anyone else ever feel like you have to water down your real story just to get past the first screen?
