The $2,800 enclosed quote that made me hate open carriers less

Had a guy on Facebook swear enclosed transport is the only way to move a classic, but my quote for a 1967 Mustang from Austin to Phoenix came back at $2,800. I went with an open carrier for $900, wrapped the car myself in plastic and foam, and it arrived with zero rock chips or scratches. Has anyone else saved big on open hauling without regrets?

The wrap job is really the secret weapon here, most folks just trust the carrier to do the protecting but a few hours of your own work can save you almost two grand. I did the same thing with a 56 Bel Air last year and covered every panel in that foam padding, then used the plastic film over the whole front end. The driver even laughed at first but by the time we unloaded it he was taking pictures asking what I used. People freak out about debris but honestly the big carriers run those same roads all day and most damage happens during loading or unloading, not at 70 mph. You can also ask for a top load spot where its up high and less likely to catch anything kicked up. That quote difference is wild though, $2,800 for basically the same truck route is just robbery, these enclosed guys charge like its a Ferrari even when its not.
