Just heard a dispatcher in Ohio say enclosed shipping is always worth it, but my $900 open trailer haul to Phoenix went fine
I was sitting in a waiting room last week and two guys were talking about moving cars across the country. One of them worked as a dispatcher out of Columbus and he said flat out that anyone who books an open trailer is asking for rock chips and faded paint, that enclosed is the only smart way to go. I get where he is coming from, since an open carrier puts your car right out in the weather and whatever the truck ahead of you kicks up, but I paid $900 to ship a sedan from Cleveland to Phoenix two winters ago on an open trailer and it showed up with nothing worse than a little road dust. The guy on the other side of the argument in that room said enclosed runs can cost double or more, and for a daily driver that math just does not work. I keep going back and forth on it. If you are moving a classic or something with fresh paint, sure, spend the extra. But for a normal car, is the enclosed premium really worth two or three times the price, or are we all just paying for peace of mind? Curious what you all have seen on long hauls.
