Found a trick for shipping my junker across state lines that saved me $200

I needed to move a non-running 1990 F150 from Phoenix to Tucson and every quote I got was over $600. I tried listing it as a parts car on a local car hauling board and a guy with an empty trailer on his way back from a delivery took it for $400 cash. Has anyone else had luck booking open return trips from smaller haulers instead of the big broker sites?

You sure that guy had insurance for hauling your truck... These small time guys with empty trailers aren't always legit. If he got into an accident and your truck got wrecked, you'd be stuck with nothing but a headache. My cousin booked a cheap return trip like that and the hauler showed up three days late with a cracked windshield on his trailer and a story about a tire blowout. Ended up costing him more in storage fees than he saved on the move.
