TIL my sleeping pad rating means nothing on cold ground
Slept in the White Mountains two weekends ago at about 28 degrees and froze my butt off on a pad rated for 15. Turns out the R-value only counts if you're not losing heat straight into the ground, so now I'm wondering if pads are even worth trusting or if I should just switch to a cot setup. Anyone else get burned by a temp rating like this?
Ever tried putting a thin foam pad under your inflatable one? My buddy did that after a cold night in the Catskills and said it made a huge difference, turns out the ground just sucks the heat right through some pads no matter what the label says.
