The $12 tarp stake I swore was a gimmick just saved my tent in Utah
Back in March I camped at Goblin Valley and a wind gust pulled out my old steel stakes before midnight. I bought those orange spiral ones my buddy kept pushing for $12 and figured they'd snap on the first rock. Last weekend the same wind hit and the tent didn't budge, not even a wobble. Anyone else find a 'gadget' stake that actually holds better than the classics?

Last March in Big Bend I watched a buddy lose his whole vestibule to a gust that sounded like a freight train. He had these cheap aluminum pins that bent into pretzels. I switched to screw style ones from a hardware store, not even camping brand, and they've held through two monsoon seasons in Colorado. First time I pulled one out I almost threw my back out though, they grip that hard. Now I carry a rubber mallet just for them, feels silly but the tent stays put.
