Ranger in Glacier told me to ditch my inflatable pad, I didn't listen and paid for it
Back in June I was heading to Glacier National Park for a 4 night backcountry trip. A ranger at the permit office looked at my pad, one of those ultralight inflatables, and said "you're going to feel every root and rock, switch to foam or bring a thicker one." I figured he was just being old school and I liked packing small. First night at Elizabeth Lake I woke up at 2am with my hip numb and my back aching. Second night I tried sleeping on my side, that lasted 2 hours. By the third night I was stuffing my puffy jacket under my hips just to get any sleep. The guy was completely right. I now bring a closed cell foam pad to layer under my inflatable, adds maybe 10 ounces but I actually sleep. Has anyone else ignored a ranger or guide and ended up regretting it on the trail? What's the specific advice you blew off and then wished you hadn't?
