Pegs bending at Rocky Fork Lake after 2 nights of storms

Camped at Rocky Fork Lake last weekend and the ground was packed clay with rocks hiding under the surface, every single tent peg I brought bent sideways by the second night. My buddy's fancy screw-in stakes held fine but mine looked like curly fries and we had to re-stake twice during the wind. Anyone found a budget peg that handles rocky soil without snapping, or do I just need to carry a hammer and pre-drill holes with a screwdriver?
