My tent review sparked a cool chat with a distant coworker

I've been posting tent reviews here for a while... Last month, a coworker from another state mentioned one of my posts. We ended up talking about favorite camping spots during a break. It really lightened up our remote work vibe... Now we're even thinking of collaborating on a gear guide for our team. Small win, but it feels good.

Last year at my old job, we had a similar thing with hiking photos (it started with just a few of us sharing). I get the worry about leaving people out, but forcing everyone into the same chat can feel just as fake. What worked for us was making a channel for outdoor stuff, but also encouraging other topics like books or pets. That way, people who aren't into camping can jump in on what they like. Organic connections from real interests build trust way faster than planned events. Just keep the door open for other hobbies to pop up naturally.

Remote teams often struggle to find common ground outside work tasks. Your tent reviews accidentally created a real shared interest. That's a solid foundation for any collaboration, way better than a forced virtual coffee chat.

Honestly that "real shared interest" thing worries me. What if half the team hates camping or feels left out of the tent talk? Then you've accidentally made a clique instead of bringing people together. A planned virtual coffee chat might feel fake, but at least it's a neutral space where everyone starts equal. Forced fun is bad, but shared work is the actual common ground we all signed up for. Relying on random hobbies just seems like a fast track to leaving some people behind.
