Know exactly what you mean, and it's part of a bigger thing where we buy the cheap version for a hobby we're just trying out. Your brother's story is the perfect example of that gamble not paying off when conditions get real. I've had great luck with a basic canister stove that has a built in windshield, it just handles wind and drizzle so much better without breaking the bank.
