My $12 headlamp outlasted my $90 one by 3 years, now I'm confused

Bought a cheap no-name headlamp at a gas station near Flagstaff back in 2019 for a last minute night hike. My expensive brand one died after 14 months, the clip snapped and it just stopped holding charge. The cheap one still runs 6 hours on medium and I've dropped it in a creek twice. I keep waiting for it to fail so I can justify buying something nice again, but it just keeps going. Is there some secret to why cheap electronics sometimes refuse to die, or did I just get insanely lucky? Anyone else had a budget piece of gear that outperformed the fancy version for years?
