Lucky streak at Lost Lake campground last weekend

I brought my new sleeping pad to Lost Lake for a 3 day trip and not a single mosquito bothered me the whole time. Even my friend Jen who uses the fancy bug spray got bit 10 times while I sat there reading. Has anyone else had a piece of gear just randomly work perfectly for no obvious reason?

Had the exact same thing happen with my old canvas tent at Pinery last summer. Everyone was getting eaten alive by blackflies but I was just chilling in my chair with a book, no bites at all. Think it's because I drenched the tent in permethrin a few years ago and left it out in the sun to dry (probably made it extra repellent somehow). Sometimes gear just decides it's your lucky charm, you know?
