I went with a cheap 40-degree bag over a fancy down one for my trip to the Smokies

Everyone said I'd regret it, but after a damp week, I'm glad I had the synthetic fill that still kept me warm when it got wet. Has anyone else picked the 'wrong' gear on purpose and had it work out?

I mean, I get where you're coming from, but I just can't agree with choosing gear you know is wrong for the job. That synthetic bag is way heavier and bulkier, and a good down bag with a proper shelter shouldn't get wet in the first place. It feels like you got lucky this time. Even @jason73 with his rain jacket, that's a short term fix, not a multi-day sleep system. I'd rather carry less weight and trust my skills to keep my down dry.

Totally, my cheap rain jacket saved me last hike.
