I finally weighed my pack instead of guessing, and 11 pounds of junk came out
I used to just cram stuff in my backpack and assume it was fine because I could carry it around the block. Back in April I borrowed a buddy's fish scale in his garage in Reno and hung the whole thing up, and it read 38 pounds for a two night trip. Right there I pulled out a cast iron pan I never once used, a second headlamp, and 6 cans of chili I only brought because they were on sale. The pan alone was 5 pounds. Now I lay everything on the floor and weigh it before it goes in, and my base weight sits around 19 pounds. It is not about buying light gear, it is about not packing like a guy who is scared of being bored. What is the dumbest heavy thing you keep throwing in your bag out of habit?
