I finally tried a tarp setup instead of my dome tent and it was way better in the rain

Last weekend in the Smokies, I swapped my usual REI tent for a simple tarp and trekking pole rig. My buddy swore by it for years but I always thought tarps were for ultralight nerds (you know, the type who count every gram). Then a storm hit at 2am and my tarp stayed totally dry while his tent got condensation all over the inside walls. I'm not going back for solo trips now - has anyone else found a tarp works better than their tent in wet weather?
