Friend told me to get a cheaper sleeping bag, I froze my butt off
My buddy Mark swore the $40 bag from Walmart would be fine for spring camping, so I got it. First night at Big Basin dropped to 38 degrees and I didn't sleep a wink shivering. Anyone else had a budget bag fail them like this?

And that bag probably wasn't even rated for 38 degrees, most cheap ones say 40 but that's the survival limit not comfort. I learned the hard way that you gotta add at least 15 degrees to what the tag says if you want to actually sleep warm. A decent bag from somewhere like REI or Alps Mountaineering will cost more but save you misery.

Mark's got a point though, a cheap bag forced you to actually learn how to layer up and use a sleeping pad right instead of relying on overpriced down. Didn't that cold night teach you more than any $200 bag ever could?
