Found out my sleeping bag rating was a lie after a cold night

I bought a 20 degree rated bag last year and took it to Big Bear Lake last month when temps hit 25. Woke up shivering and checked a gear review site that tested it in controlled conditions, and it actually failed at 32 degrees. Has anyone else found major gaps between claimed ratings and real performance?

Oh man, that exact thing happened to me with a 15 degree bag from a popular brand. I took it out in the high sierras when temps dropped to 18 and I was shivering so bad I couldn't sleep. Later I tested it myself in my backyard with a thermometer and it started failing around 28 degrees. Your mileage may vary, but I've learned the hard way to subtract 10-15 degrees from any claimed rating. Take that with a grain of salt, but I think most companies just slap a number on there based on some ideal lab conditions that don't exist in the real world.

Was it really that cold though or were you just sleeping wrong?
