A ranger at Great Smoky Mountains told me my 65L pack was 15 pounds too heavy for a 3 day trip and I ignored her until my knees quit on me
After she weighed it on her scale at the trailhead and said anything over 30 pounds for a weekend was just fear, I cut the extra stove, the second tarp, and 4 cans of chili, and now I want to know what gear you all are carrying that you never actually use.
The line about "anything over 30 pounds for a weekend was just fear" really stuck with me because I think she was right but nobody wants to hear it. My question for you is how much of that extra weight was actual gear versus stuff you brought for comfort? I ask because when I finally weighed my own pack piece by piece, the gear was fine but the "just in case" stuff was almost 12 pounds on its own. Four cans of chili is easy to spot as too much, but it is the second headlamp, the extra battery bank, and the camp shoes that sneak up on you. Did you go back through your lighter pack afterward and find other things you were still carrying out of habit?
