A guy at REI in Denver heard my $300 tent pole story and just laughed at me for 2 minutes
I was in the Denver REI on a Tuesday returning a bent tent pole and the guy at the counter asked what happened. I told him I tripped over the guy line in the dark and snapped the pole on a $300 tent after 2 trips. He just laughed and said 'that tent pole costs $18 to replace, why are you returning the whole thing?' I felt like a total idiot standing there holding a whole tent I didn't need to return. He showed me the replacement pole section on the shelf and I walked out spending $18 instead of $300. Now I keep a spare pole splint and a 5 foot section of duct tape in my pack at all times. Has anyone else almost returned gear over a part that costs less than a pizza?
