Stop telling new folks to clean focus rings with lighter fluid
Had two lenses come in this month from a guy in Denver who soaked his rings in it and now the grease is gone and the rubber is stretched out, so can we please start saying naphtha or just a dry brush instead?

...and here I was feeling proud of myself for using a little alcohol wipe on mine last week. Guess I can at least say I never dunked a whole lens in lighter fluid like it was a fryer basket. But yeah, naphtha or a dry brush is the way, that stuff melts the grease right out and leaves you with a squeaky ring that feels awful. Watched a buddy do the same thing to a Helios and he spent a month trying to regrease it with some random tube from the hardware store. Poor guy never got that smooth click back.
