I finally noticed the shutter on my first rebuild job in 2001 vs the one I did yesterday
Back then a customer's Pentax K1000 came in with grit in the mirror box and I spent 3 hours cleaning it by hand with a blower and lens tissue, but yesterday I fixed the same issue in 20 minutes with an ultrasonic cleaner a retired tech in Phoenix sold me for $60, and it makes me wonder if the old slow way was actually teaching me anything or if I was just wasting time.
The old way was not a waste of time at all. Learning to clean a mirror box by hand teaches you how every little part fits together and what can break if you rush it. An ultrasonic cleaner gets the grit out fast, but it won't tell you why the grit got in there or how to spot a bent lever while you work. That slow practice is what makes you able to trust the fast tool later instead of just hoping it does the job. The 3 hours were training your eyes and hands, not just killing time.
