Chatted with a retired repair guy at a camera show in Cleveland who said he never used a lens spanner in 40 years.

He told me he just used brass shims and a steady hand to adjust rangefinders, and it made me wonder if I'm over-relying on specialized tools that aren't always needed.

Did I ever have the opposite opinion? I used to carry three different spanners in my bag, one for each brand I shot with. Then I stripped a retaining ring on an old Canon 50mm f/1.4 because I got greedy with the torque. That little blonde moment cost me a weekend of work and a trip to the shop. Now I keep a set of brass shims in my wallet. They work for everything from Leica to Mamiya and I've never had a ring slip since. The old timers knew what they were doing.

Brass shims saved my bacon too @morgan.joseph, plain genius.
