Starting with @amymiller's question, I'd just hold up the shattered remains next to a price tag for a new one. Like, here's your toaster that needs a seventy dollar part, and here's a better toaster for twenty bucks at Target. Sometimes the math does the talking for you, especially with stuff that's basically duct tape and hope already. How do you gently say a thing is just trash?
