A guy at the Bellflower camera swap talked me out of a $140 CLA kit and into a $6 pencil
I was at the Bellflower camera swap two Saturdays back, table full of junk lenses, when an older repairman watched me pack up a cleaning kit I had just bought for $140. He pulled a plain HB pencil from his shirt pocket and asked if I had ever cleaned a stubborn rangefinder contact with one. I laughed it off. Then he showed me two Nikon bodies he had just fixed that morning, both had gummed contacts that no solvent would touch, and a light pencil rub brought them back in under two minutes. I tried it on a dead Yashica Rangefinder when I got home, scraped the corrosion off the battery contact, and the meter jumped to life. I have used that trick on four cameras since. Has anyone else had an old timer hand them a fix that cost practically nothing?

Used to roll my eyes at pencil tricks, but that battery contact fix sold me.
