Watch out for those old telephone cable splices in crawlspaces

Spent 45 minutes yesterday tracking down a signal drop that turned out to be a corroded splice from a phone line install back in 1988. Has anyone else run into these time wasters on residential jobs?

Did you check if the splice was wrapped with that old cloth tape or the waterproof gel stuff?

Buddy of mine found one that still had the original crimp connectors from the 70s.
