The torque spec that surprised me on a 5/16 messenger clamp
I was flipping through an old Anixter catalog at the shop in Bakersfield and saw a footnote that a 5/16 inch messenger clamp only needs about 15 to 20 foot pounds, way less than I figured. I had been cranking those things down hard for years thinking tighter meant safer, but the spec sheet says over-tightening can crush the strand and weaken the grip. Started using my torque wrench on the last 30 drops and none of them have slipped yet. Anybody else ever actually look up the spec on those or do you all just go by feel like I did?
