The 2 minute check a retired tech in Mesa showed me before I touch a single coax
I was about to drill into a wall at a job in Mesa when this older guy named Ray, who was training me for the day, grabbed my wrist and pointed at an outlet box on the floor near my feet. He pulled out his voltage tester and showed me it was live, saying the lady had a bad outlet that whole corner had been feeding off for who knows how long. He ran that tester over every outlet in the house before we started, which took maybe 2 minutes total, and found two more that were wired backwards. Now I do that same walk through on every single install before my drill comes out. How many of you test outlets first, or do you just trust the breaker panel?
Does the breaker panel even tell you the whole story though? A breaker can be on and the outlet still reads fine until you put a load on it, so I check the outlet itself with a plug tester and hit the reset buttons too. Trusting the panel alone is how you end up drilling into a live wire like Ray almost let happen.
