Spent 4 hours trying to fish a line through a finished wall in a 1920s house, only to find the entire cavity was packed with old newspaper insulation.

Our plaster walls were a mess, crumbling in every corner. I mixed up a batch of joint compound with a little bit of PVA glue to help it stick to the old lath. Took three thin coats, sanding between each one, to get them smooth. Now you'd never know they were about to fall apart a year ago.
