My old boss said to never use zip ties on a drop wire, and I finally get why

When I started out, my boss in Dayton would go on about this. He said to only use lashing wire or proper clamps, that zip ties would fail in a year or two. I thought he was just being old school and cheap, so for my first few solo jobs I used heavy duty zip ties to secure the drop from the pole to the house. Fast forward 18 months, and I got called back to one of those houses because the cable was sagging. Every single zip tie had gotten brittle in the sun and snapped. The whole line was just hanging by the messenger strand. I spent half a day redoing it with the right gear. He was totally right. The UV and weather just eats them. What do you guys use for a permanent hold on an aerial drop?

Your old boss was smart to stick with lashing wire. I've seen zip ties fail even faster in really hot climates. The plastic just turns to dust. We use stainless steel banding clamps now for anything that needs to last. They cost a bit more up front, but you never have to go back and fix it. It's worth the extra few minutes to do it right the first time.
