Had a weird moment last Tuesday in a crawlspace under a house in Fresno
I was trying to fish a line through a tight spot and realized I've been holding my breath the whole time for years, like it helps me focus. I counted and I was doing it for almost 30 seconds at a stretch, which is just dumb. Anyone else catch themselves doing weird physical stuff on the job without thinking?

Reminds me of my buddy who installs security systems. He told me he used to clench his jaw so hard while threading wires through attics that he'd get headaches. He didn't even notice until his dentist asked about the wear on his teeth. Said he had to consciously tell himself to relax his face every ten minutes. It's crazy what our bodies do on autopilot during those tense little jobs.

My old guitar teacher had this weird habit of squeezing the neck way too hard during tricky chords. He only figured it out when his hand would go numb after twenty minutes of practice. Had to put little sticky notes on his music stand that just said "loosen up.

Yeah, the "autopilot" thing is so real... I've seen guys on my crew who will stand on one leg like a stork the whole time they're working under a sink, just balancing there for no reason. They don't even feel the cramp until they try to walk away.
