Bought a $200 cable toner and it barely works

Picked up that fancy Fluke toner kit last month thinking it'd save me time on dead pairs. First three houses it worked fine, but yesterday on a new build it wouldn't pick up anything past 50 feet. Anyone else have luck with the cheaper Klein model instead?

Sometimes the issue isn't the toner itself but the kind of signal it puts out. Newer building materials with foil backing or metal studs can really mess with certain frequencies. You might get better results with a basic probe that uses a louder analog signal rather than a fancy digital one.

Go grab an old analog toner from a pawn shop, they work way better on that tricky foil backed stuff.
