Appreciation post: my $140 toner and probe kit saved me from a three hour attic crawl
Last Tuesday I had a drop line that was dead as a doornail. No signal, no voltage, nothing. I was about to start climbing into a hot attic to trace every foot of RG6 by hand. Then I remembered I spent the money on a proper toner and probe kit back in April. Found the break in about 20 minutes, it was a chewed up spot behind a bush near the ground block. That $140 paid for itself in one job. Has anyone else had a cheap toner fail them and send them up a ladder for nothing?

I read somewhere that a lot of toner kits fail because people don't test the batteries first, and honestly that's been my luck with cheap ones. The cheap set I had would only work if the cable was within three feet of me, which is useless for anything real. The $140 price tag stings but that one time it saves you from roasting in an attic, it's basically paid for itself. I had a buddy who tried to skip the toner and just guessed at a run, ended up cutting three different lines before he found the right one. That's a lot more expensive than a decent probe kit in my book.
