Unpopular opinion: a $12 card scraper beat my $80 smoothing plane on curly maple
I picked up a piece of curly maple from a guy in Tacoma three months ago for a small jewelry box and the tearout from my smoother was so bad I almost tossed the board. My old shop teacher kept telling me to just burnish the edge on a card scraper, so I finally did it, rolled a burr with a screwdriver shaft, and in maybe 20 minutes the whole panel came out glass smooth with zero sanding. I still reach for the plane on straight grain, but on figured stuff that little steel rectangle is doing 90 percent of the work now. Anyone else feel like we overcomplicate panel prep, or is it just me being cheap?
