Spent $80 on a 'universal' cabinet door template that fit exactly zero of my doors.

Gotta disagree a bit here. I grabbed a cheap template set for about $25 and it works fine on most standard doors. The trick is you gotta adjust it for each door instead of just clamping and hoping.

Yeah, I used to buy into the idea that those universal tools would save me time and money. Figured it was smarter than measuring each door myself. After a few disasters like yours, I realized they're almost never truly universal. My time is worth more than the hassle of returning something that doesn't work. Now I just take the extra few minutes to measure and mark it out the old way. It's slower, but it's right the first time.
