My brother-in-law thinks I owe him a kitchen remodel

He asked for a full set of custom cabinets as a birthday gift. I told him materials alone would cost more than my car. Now he's sulking because I suggested he try IKEA.

That reminds me of my friend whose cousin asked for all granite countertops as a wedding gift. She told him the quote was insane, like her whole savings account, and said maybe look at laminate. He got so offended and stopped talking to her for a month. Where do people get the idea that other folks are just sitting on that kind of cash?

What makes people think everyone has stacks of cash lying around? @the_cora, that story about the countertops is too real. I mean, my neighbor once asked if our whole block could go in on a hot tub for his anniversary gift, like we were all just waiting to spend a grand each. We said maybe a nice grill instead, and he acted like we insulted him. Idk, it's like some folks see a paycheck and assume it's all fun money.

Social media really skews what people think is normal... like @the_cora's cousin seeing all those fancy kitchens online and expecting granite. It's not just about having cash, it's about feeling behind if you don't keep up. You see friends posting vacations or new cars and assume they're doing great, but they might be in debt. That pressure makes some folks forget that rent and bills eat up most paychecks. So when a neighbor asks for a hot tub fund, they're just living in that filtered world.
