I finally stopped using my grandpa's sharpening stone, and the difference is clear.

Was your grandpa's stone really worn down? I saw a video where they said old oilstones can glaze over and stop cutting well. The presenter showed how a fresh water stone makes a sharper edge in less time. Makes sense if you were using something super old.

Try sanding it down first to remove the glaze. I mean, it usually brings an old stone back to life.

That bit about the glaze is like so many old tools that just need a refresh.
