Hot take: pocket screws are fine for face frames and I'm tired of pretending they aren't
I've been building cabinets in a shop outside Dayton for 11 years and I keep hearing guys say you gotta use dowels or loose tenons on face frames or it's amateur hour. Here's the thing though: I've got a kitchen I built with pocket screws 7 years ago and not one joint has opened up. The trick is you clamp it before you drive the screw and you don't overdrive it, that's it. The old timers in my shop told me pocket screws would fail within 2 years from seasonal movement and I've just never seen it happen. If you're hanging 200 pound uppers off a face frame that's one thing, but for standard base cabinets they hold up fine in my experience. Curious if anyone else has run into actual pocket screw failures on face frames or if this is just one of those things we repeat because we heard it once.
