A retired stair builder's jig trick just saved me $300 in scrap

I was fighting a compound angle on a curved banister rail in Portland and about to trash a third piece of walnut. An old guy who used to build spiral stairs watched me for a minute and said, 'stop measuring with your eyes, plot it on the floor with a chalk line first.' I spent 20 minutes laying it out flat and transferred those points up. It fit on the first try, which never happens. Has anyone else used a floor layout trick for tricky miters instead of going straight to the saw?
