Vent: My dad swore the 'envelope method' was outdated, but I tried it anyway and proved him wrong

So my dad has been budgeting since the 80s and he told me last year that cash envelopes are a waste of time in 2023. Said apps do the same thing better. I listened to him for about 6 months and kept overspending on groceries by like $40-60 a month. Finally grabbed some envelopes from the dollar store and tried it for August. Zero overspend. I actually saved $73 that month. Anyone else have a family member give bad advice that you had to unlearn yourself?

My friend's mom swore she could save more by just "being careful" but she kept blowing her fun money every single month. She finally tried envelopes and ended up with enough saved for a weekend trip to the beach.

Older generations often forget their own solutions still work, like @beth_stone's friend learning paper can beat apps.
