Took me 18 months to realize my "emergency fund" was actually just a savings account with no real purpose
I kept telling myself I was being smart by stashing cash every month, but when my car transmission blew last August and I needed $2,400, I realized I had no actual plan for what counted as an emergency versus just another expense, and it took me a year and a half of scrambling to finally sit down and define the rules for when I can touch that fund - anyone else find that part harder than the saving itself?

Ha, right? I spent a whole year and a half calling my "rainy day fund" something I could dip into for literally any raindrop. Then my water heater died in December and I spent a week trying to decide if that counted or if I should just take out a credit card. I finally settled on only touching it for things that physically stop me from getting to work or keep me from sleeping in my house. But then my dog ate a sock and needed emergency surgery, and I was back to square one trying to figure out if dog emergencies count.
